Derek Allen, Author & Illustrator
As a child, I was a reluctant reader, and I struggled with focus. I had trouble finishing books and usually just skipped to the end. But that changed when I was 8 years old. I heard Shel Silverstein during a classroom read-aloud, and immediately after, I checked out “Where the Sidewalk Ends” from the school library. For the first time, reading was fun, and I was able to finish an entire book. I had no idea poems and drawings could made into something so funny, clever, and easy to read. From that point on, I was hooked.
I've always enjoyed drawing and painting, and I dabbled in traditional watercolor and charcoal art for years as a hobby. I never thought about becoming a writer or illustrator, until one feverish night a couple of years ago, I woke up after having the wackiest rhyming dreams! Yarts, Gares, Snoors … I stayed up all night writing and sketching. Once I started I never stopped, and many nights later, Moonbeams and Rhyme Dreams was born! I wrote this book from the perspective of my 8-year-old self, and I hope it’ll get other reluctant readers excited, too.
I am blessed to have discovered this new passion and joy for writing and drawing, coming together in a way I never dreamed of. As of today, I have written over 400 stories, and new ideas continue to fill my head every day.
I have BIG ideas for the future and lots more stories to share, so I hope you'll stick around and join me as I continue spreading my sillies around the world!
